They start as small ‘en plein air' works, then become large studio-completed paintings. I am motivated by the changing weather patterns effecting the area around Mulgoa, on the outskirts of Sydney. After five years of drought and annual fires, the rains came. And it rained for three years! My artistic journey has been influenced by my upbringing in the Middle East, Moroccan pottery always captivated me with the rich earthy colours, symbolic significance and the use of metal overlays on pottery.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eCurrently residing in the enchanting Blue Mountains, I find myself more connected to the spirits of the forest, informing my work. Through my art, I seek to symbolise the essence of all goddesses and pay homage to the reverence of all spirits.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eMy previous experience in the engineering world has also played a role in shaping my artistic approach. The precision required in engineering has infused my pieces with meticulous attention to detail. However, it is the process of Saggar firing that grants me a wonderful sense of freedom. My work, mostly wheel thrown, has to be polished with a stone by hand then smoke fired. The process allows my pieces to be natural in feel, often mistaken for stone yet warmer to the touch. The absence of glazes lets the earth shine through with the knowledge that each piece is as individual as a fingerprint. Allowing you to appreciate and respect the elements that have created each totem. My work, mostly wheel thrown, has to be polished with a stone by hand then smoke fired. The process allows my pieces to be natural in feel, often mistaken for stone yet warmer to the touch. The absence of glazes lets the earth shine through with the knowledge that each piece is as individual as a fingerprint. She felt her drawing skills, learned during her time in an art studio in the city were more suited to the medium of watercolour. Julie has developed her own unique style, pushing the boundaries of the watercolour medium to produce works full of light and depth of tone whilst maintaining the transparent quality of the medium.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJulie has expanded her skill set by painting in other mediums including oil, acrylic, pastel and charcoal. It was a hot summers day and the roaring sound of rushing water promised a cool experience. The foliage changed from eucalyptus to ferns to moss. Deep within the valley the gently flowing creek, wet ground, ferns and ancient rocks created a timeless world, a glimpse into the past. Despite the modern paving steps that make the walk easy, it felt untouched by humans. Canyon walls towered overhead, sometimes closing in as the path lead through tunnels. Despite a passing storm, the warm summer sunlight filtered through tall tree foliage and the air was cool on my hot day. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn my work, exposing the deep colours that appear in the dark, shadowed recesses is one challenge. Revealing the light bouncing between walls is another. The water both reflects and absorbs the light and so becomes luminous. And the misty early start was pure magic. Deep within the valley the gently flowing creek, wet ground, ferns and ancient rocks created a timeless world, a glimpse into the past. Despite the modern paving steps that make the walk easy, it felt untouched by humans. Canyon walls towered overhead, sometimes closing in as the path lead through tunnels. Despite a passing storm, the warm summer sunlight filtered through tall tree foliage and the air was cool on my hot day. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn my work, exposing the deep colours that appear in the dark, shadowed recesses is one challenge. Revealing the light bouncing between walls is another. The water both reflects and absorbs the light and so becomes luminous. And the misty early start was pure magic.
