Some of these pieces were begun en plein air and completed in the studio, whilst others were worked from onsite sketches and subsequently painted in my home studio. Working from these sketches returns me to Arkaroola, to the feeling and memory \u0026amp; I try to capture that feeling in paint.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eABOUT THE ARTIST\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJulie Simmons trained as a commercial artist (Graphic Artist) on leaving school. This was followed working as a tracer and detail draughtsperson for an engineering company. Julie also produced exploded view drawings for car manuals.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhilst having her family Julie completed two Diplomas in pottery at Penrith Tafe and for the next 16yrs had a successful career as a studio potter.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e In 2004 she was drawn back to painting, in particular watercolours working in the wet in wet tradition. She felt her drawing skills, learned during her time in an art studio in the city were more suited to the medium of watercolour. Julie has developed her own unique style, pushing the boundaries of the watercolour medium to produce works full of light and depth of tone whilst maintaining the transparent quality of the medium.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJulie has expanded her skill set by painting in other mediums including oil, acrylic, pastel and charcoal. She paints en plein air regularly including numerous week long painting trips each year. I’ll take photos and paint a few special scenes. Then it’s back to the studio to start my work, inspired. \u003cspan\u003eSometimes I create a composite scene from two or three different places, and other times it’s a true representation.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy new work is becoming more detailed.  More patterns and textures. These combine and overlap, producing depth and a third dimension.  I love the ‘busyness’ that I see everywhere in dense bushland, and I love to paint these tight details. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs a protest against AI images, I am moving to thicker, gestural paint layers. I like to leave my palette knife-print, so to speak. Paintings are loosely based on realism, with many expressive strokes, and almost relief sculpture for trees and rocks. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are musical analogies: ferns have rhythm, leaves on branches wave like violin bows, and flowing waters sound like the double bass! My textured application of paint is applied with this orchestra in mind!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn past years I have painted the Mulgoa bush after heavy rain, but at the moment we are dry. The ground is hard, and the leafy carpet is crisp underfoot. It looks like autumn with browns, creams and golds. After five years of drought and annual fires, the rains came. And it rained for three years!
