When painting I aim to explore the tensions within the trinity of colour, form and texture. Each time I begin a new painting I try to approach it as though I’ve never attempted the use of this trinity before. This method allows me to abandon learned formulas, and to revamp any comfortable approach I might have acquired through previous paintings. My attempts are not always successful, but they are always honest.
For me, each colour has its own ‘space’ and so I try to avoid forcing too many into a single painting. I love texture as it helps me ‘resolve’ aspects of the work. I guess in the back of my head there is an ever-present golden trinity between colour, composition and texture, and sometimes (or often) one dominates the others.
