How did we get here?
Our Journey in the Blue Mountains - Katherine McCully
We reside and work in the beautiful Blue Mountains and the wider region of Western New South Wales. It is amid these stunning landscapes in the lower Blue Mountains that our story begins.
The idea for Nationwide Curating came to life during the COVID pandemic while project managing the Blue Mountains Print Prize prize in Glenbrook (NSW) at the Blue Mountains Creative Arts Centre [BMCAC]. This prize had to close prematurely due to lockdowns. I was responsible for packaging and returning BMPP artworks through mail, coordinating private collections, and making personal deliveries after curating and installing the Blue Mountains Print Prize in 2019. This art prize is owned by BMCAC, which had also enlisted my help to install paper display systems for their printroom to also function as a works on paper gallery. I was also enlisted to transform an additional building into a gallery intended for future exhibitions and artist residencies.
This experience led to a significant realization. While at home collecting more supplies such as bubble wrap, tissue paper, and frame corners, I understood that I was fully equipped to manage the exhibition packdown. Winner announcements were shared on social media, turning what could have been an art-event crisis due to sudden lockdowns into a productive endeavor.
Having installed the gallery systems for this art prize, I curated the exhibition, managed artwork sales and reporting, all while navigating an event during a crisis. It was at this moment that I recognized I already possessed a valuable service, and it was time to give it a name. Nationwide Curating was born.
Gallery NWC came later.....
