‘Corroding Bush’ is a solo exhibition showcasing Maria Shaw as a ceramic artist. Within this body of work, she develops on her exploration of Australian botanicals. Shaw became obsessed with fallen Australian eucalyptus leaves and scattered seed pods she collected through her mediative process of observation. The fallen leaf’s colours change as it experiences weathering in the drying sun and the rain. It is the imperfections from the wear and tear that truly captures Shaw’s interest. With clay, she hand-builds textural forms that emulate leaves and seed pods. Colour is then applied to show the intrinsic beauty of these ephemeral botanical elements. The fired clay perfectly preserves these moments in time, capturing the leaf in mid-decomposition.
