ARTIST STATEMENT
Ted Lewis has been painting full-time for over 30 years, holding his first one-man exhibition at the Hesley Gallery in Orange, NSW, in 1976 at the age of 18. Since then, he has had many successful exhibitions in Orange, Katoomba (Blue Mountains NSW), Bathurst, Sydney, Peak Hill, South Port (Queensland), Canberra and Canowindra.
Ted has a great love of the Australian bush and takes his paints with him wherever he goes. He tries to capture the light and vibrancy of the ever-changing landscapes – landscapes that range from the colourful beaches to the brilliant reds and blues of Central Australia – the subjects are endless and the challenges many.
In many of his works, Ted likes to experiment with colour to produce a more contemporary landscape, particularly in acrylics, while using oil to produce subtle changes in light and atmosphere. Over the years Ted has received several awards for his work.
Ted completes a lot of his work in his studio, particularly the larger, more contemporary pieces. His traditional paintings can be created from photos of the bush, sunrises, misty mornings and colourful sunsets taken on his property.
He also loves to paint on location where he can enjoy the atmosphere, the natural light and the rush from being “on location”. One of Ted’s favourite locations is the West Macdonnell’s Ranges in Alice Spring – he loves the strong reds and purple blues in the shadows.
