ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
An exhibition of work by Australian and New Zealand artists exploring and challenging the theme GRID through drawing, painting, light, installation, printmaking and weaving.
GRID was largely a contemporary art exhibition with traditional underpinnings with artists exploring the theme through the various lenses of identity, interaction, racial politics, the ephemeral, consumerism, aesthetics, repetition, the landscape and world politics.
GRID was installed alongside 'e Kohao O Te Ngira – the Eye of the Needle' by Curators, George Kahi, cultural advisor to the gallery, and Sylvia Nelson who collaboratively developed the kaupapa for the exhibition to commemorate this historic occasion, and to reference locality and identity. Sylvia Nelson collaborated with the curator of GRID, Katherine Kennedy and two prominent weaving collectives to achieve an ambitious installation by both the Pa Te Aroha Weavers and Piritahi Marae Weavers.
