The Australian King Parrot is a beautiful bird, about 43cm long, including the tail.
There are two subspecies, which differ in size, those in the north being smaller than their southern relatives.
The male has red, breast, head and undersides. The rump is blue, the tail and wings green with pale green shoulder bands, and there is a blue band on the back of the neck between the red head and the green of the back. The female has a green head and breast and little if any of the shoulder band.
She has a grey beak, whereas the male has a black lower mandible with an orange base and a reddish orange upper mandible with a black tip.
The male also has yellow eyes, while both females and juveniles share similar plumage colouring, and have brown eyes.
The King Parrot occurs from Southern Victoria to North and Central Queensland, often in groups with rosellas. In winter and may also be seen in parts of Sydney and central Queensland in the Carnarvon Gorge.
It lives in eucalyptus woodlands in and near to temperate and subtropical rainforest, feeding on fruits and seeds.
It is listed as a species of least concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List.
