ABOUT THE ARTIST
La Magie Quotidienne Exhibition Statement ‘25
The development of silhouette is linked to that of outline drawing and shadow painting possibly originating in the cave murals of stone age peoples, especially those in France and Spain.
Silhouette image design in single hue and tone, popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, the art of paper-cutting has become an integral part of many cultures around the world. It can be practice in many ways from traditional to contemporary. From Asia to America, which brings me to introduce the American paper- cutting artist Kara Walker, I fell in love with her art before I knew her name.
In France I grew up with silhouette images and was fascinated by the accuracy and delicateness that can be achieved with just a pair of scissors.
Early in 2024 I had what I called a Matisse moment where the time came to regrettably give away my art practice from painting to paper-cut as my eyes were failing me.
I began with a resolute approach but with no idea how or what to depict, only to know that the reduce palette of blue and black was the way to go at least for a while.
Cutting paper revealed itself to be an excellent process of creating little snippets of story telling and came to see them as my fairytales in dark times.
