LISA SHEPHERD
Artist Statement
Delicate and fragile, bold and striking; the eucalyptus species demands our attention and their importance to bio-diversity has never been more important. Through the medium of cyanotypes, I have produced a body of work which I hope reflects the beauty of the Blue Mountains and a species of tree whose powerful properties are sometimes overlooked. I use both traditional and wet cyanotypes to create delicate representations of various eucalyptus species. They are bursting with life and energy and I have tried to capture these feelings in my work - muted depths of blue and a soft three-dimensional appearance helps bring the subject to life. The use of metallic medium adds an exciting element; subtle yet mesmerizing and alluring under different light. I hope my work encourages you to appreciate and realize the importance of our eucalyptus trees; especially here in the Blue Mountains.
BIO
Born in England, Lisa Shepherd emigrated to Australia in 2005. After studying interior design she went on to specialise in textile design and printmaking. She now primarily works with the historic alternative photographic process of cyanotype; flowers being her inspiration. Sometimes the cyanotype is embellished further with embroidery, watercolour and gold leaf; sometimes it is beautiful in its simplicity. “As a visual artist I work hard to create pieces that encapsulate the beauty existing to all of us in our natural environment. I like to capture this beauty in a simple, delicate way taking nothing away from the plant itself allowing it to shine through majestically”. Lisa Shepherd
