Oil on cork

approx. 32cm x 93cm

ARTIST STATEMENT

This group of paintings is concerned with the place of the porcelain figurine in the Western cultural canon, as inspired particularly from the Meissen porcelain figures of Germany. These works are a painted reimagining of characters in a personal drama. Today, these images of idealised virtue could be seen  as anachronistic, or perhaps parody. But finding song lyrics that seemed to fit as titles, has given the figures a new life, a new story and has repurposed these sweet and naïve dioramas.

All the work is painted in oil either on canvas, cork tiles and a couple on bits of discarded LVL timber.

ARTIST BIO

Pleasance Ingle is a visual artist currently living and working in the Blue Mountains of NSW. Having achieved a Diploma of Fine Art, she has exhibited in group shows in Sydney, the Blue Mountains and the Central West since the 80’s. To date she has had 12 solo shows, the most recent being at Gallery 47, Rylstone in the Central West.

Pleasance’s work explores humankind’s interaction with the world as seen through figures (often in the landscape), objects, animals and the built environment. In all cases, the human will or view is imposed; as fit for purpose or as aspiration or trophy.

Each body of work focusses on one particular aspect of this. Work is generated from visits to the outback, places abroad and from the immediate world around.

Most recently her work has been included in the annual Portrait Shows at the Cultural Centre in Katoomba, as well as their Collectors’ Edition Exhibitions. In addition, in the last twelve months she has been a finalist in the Blacktown Art Prize, the Georges River Art Prize, the Kennedy Art Prize (Adelaide), the Hornsby Art Prize ( Highly Commended), EGAG small Artwork Prize (Bairnsdale) and the Lethbridge Gallery Small Art Award  (Brisbane)
