This painting captures the rhythm, movement and beauty in the classical Indian dance style 'Kathak'. The word Kathak refers to story-telling as throughout its evolution from folk dance to court dance to contemporary dance it has remained as a means of telling a story. The incorporation of carvings inspired by Indian folk art at the centre of this work suggests a new way of evaluating and appreciating ancient ancestral ways of knowing and being. This composition demonstrates the living transmission of culture that has been carried out through generations of dancers such as myself.
