ARTIST BIO

Anne Bowman is a Sydney born illustrator/artist living in the Blue Mountains with her family and two dogs, Jett and Schnuffy.
Her predominant artistic interest is in Natural History illustration. She has earned a Bachelor of Science majoring in Zoology from Sydney University, along with a Bachelor of Science majoring in illustration from UWS Nepean. Both BSc’s have allowed her to combine art and science, and afforded opportunities to work in a diversity of places and
mediums. Her predominant medium is watercolour, although she also enjoys the more three dimensional challenge of paper sculpture.
Her attention to fine detail and small sculptural work was utilised in her work as a biological model maker with the Australian Museum in Sydney, and as an assistant model-maker to children’s author Jeannie Baker on her short animated film 'The Story of Rosy Dock'. She also worked as a finishing artist on the film ‘Babe 2’. She has illustrated
for Australian Geographic magazine, Weldon Owen Publishing, National Parks & Wildlife, Parenting magazine, ANH magazine, ABC Books and The School Magazine along with many other educational publications. Other assignments
have included sign illustrations for the Blue Mountains City Council, including for ‘The Gully’ project and illustrations of hanging swamps, for educational signs at Browns Swamp and Wentworth Falls, signage illustration for Central
Tablelands Management, as well as the painting of model birds for use in educational programmes on Swift Parrot and Regents Honeyeater identification.
Anne’s book on endangered wildlife, ‘Count Them While You Can’, which she wrote and illustrated, was listed as an Eve Pownall Notable Book for 2011, and short-listed for the 2011 Wilderness Society Environmental Award for Children’s Literature. She also produced a range of endangered species illustrations for the giftware company Ashdene.
As a member of WIRES for 16 years, Anne cared for a variety of orphaned and injured wildlife, particularly kangaroos and wallabies. This hands-on experience has given her a deep appreciation of the amazing qualities of our fauna as well as providing invaluable help to her as a wildlife illustrator.
Anne’s interest and concern for our wildlife and their habitat is coupled with a concern with the impact of humanity on our environment. The soy sauce fish containers are one tiny example of the proliferation of plastic, single-use items we throw away by the thousands. By incorporating them into colourful pieces with other discarded items, using a more playful approach, she hopes her ‘Kitsch Fish’ will draw attention to a serious issue which should concern us all.
