ABOUT THE WORK

This work belongs to Katherine Kennedy's recent exhibition 'Social Drought II: Excavating ISO' which continues Katherine's exploration of tensions between the internal and external worlds in which we reside. Specifically, this second exhibition, extending upon Social Drought in 2019, looks at the domestic landscape. The difficulties and the joy in navigating change that is suddenly thrust upon you and the positive outcomes of insecurity resulting in creative expression. 'Leaving no stone unturned', Katherine took to a tumultuous early 2020 through investigating new pastimes. Suddenly, expressive forms such as landscaping, gardening, designing lamps and finding new bushtracks to explore, became new, healthy obsessions. Thus the term 'excavation' became synonymous with both the literal and metaphysical. Potentiality became actuality as Katherine moved earth to discover natural treasures buried beneath. In this exhibition you will find tensions between light and dark, wet and dry and a childlike love of discovery. This divergent exhibition presents paintings, framed assemblages of found objects, sculptural assemblages, lamp designs, photography and installation. This varied approach to arts practice is representative of Katherine's navigation of a continued theme though through the lens of a tumultuous 2019-2020.
