The Tasmanian Azure Kingfisher is a small kingfisher approximately 16-19cm in length, and weighs about 40g. It lives along forested rivers of Tasmania, on the west, north west and south coast, the east, north-east and centre as well as Bass Strait islands, mainly in wet sclerophyll eucalypt forest. It feeds on freshwater crayfish, aquatic insects, frogs and small fish, catching its prey by plunging from perches over the water.
The kingfisher nests in holes which it drills into the river bank, usually near the top of the bank, with a tunnel leading to a nesting chamber, and both parents care for the young.
The main threats to its survival are habitat clearing and modification of vegetation along river and stream banks, acidic mine drainage from tailing dams, construction in waterways, competition with Brown Trout as well as overfishing and poaching of whitebait.
The population is estimated to be between 250 and 1000 birds (2014)
The Tasmanian Azure Kingfisher is listed as Endangered under the EPBC Act.
