ARTIST BIO - BREA LANYON
Brea Lanyon is an Australian multidisciplinary artist and founder of VANTA, a contemporary design atelier specialising in fine metal. Working across tattooing, fine art, and architectural metalwork, her practice is defined by a singular principle: permanence through line.
With over a decade of experience as a tattoo artist, Lanyon’s approach is grounded in precision, discipline, and intent. Tattooing, as a medium that allows no revision, informs her broader practice. Each line must be resolved before it is made. This philosophy translates directly into her metalwork, where drawings are transformed into laser-cut steel, requiring complete structural integrity. Every connection is deliberate. Nothing is decorative without purpose.
Through VANTA, Lanyon extends intimate, body-scale storytelling into architectural form. Her works function as both sculpture and structure, embedding personal narrative, memory, and identity into built environments. Drawing on influences from Art Nouveau and Art Deco, native Australiana, nature’s geometry, and personal narratives, her visual language balances fluid organic movement with controlled symmetry.
Her work spans large-scale panels, sculptural objects, and functional design, positioned at the intersection of art, architecture, and lived experience. Whether applied to the body or to space, Lanyon’s work carries a consistent intent: to create pieces that hold presence over time.
Recent projects have expanded into exhibition-based works exploring systems of growth, labour, and transformation, alongside ongoing collaborations across design, hospitality, and the built environment.
Lanyon’s practice continues to evolve from skin to steel, maintaining a clear through-line of authorship, material honesty, and enduring form.
