The Red-tailed Black Cockatoo is found in WA, Qld., NSW, NT, SA and Vic.
There are 5 sub-species, differing in body size, beak size and shape.
Adult males have a characteristic pair of bright red panels on the tail that give the species its name.
They live in a wide variety of habitats, from shrublands and grasslands, eucalypt, casuarina and Acacia woodlands, to rainforests.
2 of the 5 sub-species of this cockatoo are of increasing concern.
In the Eastern States, the South Eastern population, C.b. graptogne, is listed as Endangered under the EPBC Act, and in Western Australia, the South Western population C.b. naso, is listed as Vulnerable.
