Sergio Sill was born in Pola, Italy, in 1946 and migrated to Australia with his family in
1951. Early in his childhood it become evident that he loved to work with his hands -
carving, drawing and painting. As a teenager he would escape Melbourne to venture
down the rugged Victorian coastline and revel in surfing and his love of the wind, the sea,
and the freedom nature provided.
After studying and practicing architecture for four years, Sergio embarked on a different
journey enrolling in an Art and Design course at Preston Institute of Technology. In 1979,
he set a Pottery Studio in Hawthorn Victoria, later relocating to Upper Lansdowne in the
NSW mid-north coast.
His artistic passion continued to evolve and 1990 took him from the pottery-wheel to the
easel. His love for the sea inspired him to move to Sydney's Central Coast were set up a
studio/gallery in 1997.
Sergio likes to punctuate his painting with intermittent trends of inspiration from the
wonders of nature and exotic lands where the eye, heart and soul find tranquility, joy,
moments of beauty in stillness and transcending into a profound reality. It is these
moments and exhilarations that Sergio aspires to capture on paint, pastel and mixed
media to share with others.

Artistic Approach
I love to commune with nature and travel to locations in remote areas from Australia’s
rugged coastline across to its magnificent mountains sketching and absorbing the sense
of place, the atmosphere, the forms, the colours, the spirit of the sea and the land.
Aiming to transform the sea and landscapes transformed through spirit, I experiment with
various techniques.
I may start off with gouache, pastels, graphite, mixed media for the initial studies then
moving onto larger oil paintings, drawing into them with graphite, oil sticks and natural
elements such as tree branches as well as large stiff brooms always seeking to
experiment and create beauty. The work may become an abstraction of nature.
