Worldwide, there are 47 species of seahorse living in shallow waters of temperate and tropical regions.
Most favoured habitats are coral reefs, seagrass beds, estuaries and mangroves. The diet consists of small crustaceans.
Seahorses are used in Asian medicines, although it is not known how many are harvested from wild populations, and threats to their habitat are an increasing population pressure. More research needs to be done on these animals to assess population trends, but numbers worldwide are believed to be declining.
