ARTIST STATEMENT

landscape artist - biography/ statement

At the tender age of 16 Roland Hemmert announced to his parents that he was going to be an artist. His Mother ran out of the room in tears. Now in his 60s and much to his family’s chagrin he continues with his wayward artistic endeavours.

Whilst other young folk were going to discos, doing drugs and cruising the streets (and generally having a life) Roland was mostly to be found perusing art galleries and museums and rifling through artbooks in an attempt to figure out how those before him did it.

Thus, the artist describes himself as mostly self-taught.

Roland also spent 3 years in the 1980s based in Germany with jaunts across Europe to visit galleries (what else!) as well as painting and sketching which he feels gave him a good foundation to build an arts practice upon.

The world of books also looms large with Roland (a former bookseller of many decades) and this along with his arts practice has seen him also forge friendships and connections with people within the literary world and the humanities.

Be it Historians, Archaeologists, Environmental Scientists or Poets Roland readily admits that these disciplines influence him just as much as other visual artists.

“For me as a landscape artist it’s not just the colour and the beauty of a place it is also its history and archaeology. Who was there before me, who is there now?  All these layers that along with the flora and fauna or the environmental concerns just add and enhance my insights of a place in order I hope, to capture more than what my eyes can see.”

For more than 30 years Roland has lived and made art upon the sandstone plateaus of the Dharug and the Gundungurra, The Blue Mountains.

Regularly exhibiting in The Blue Mountains and other parts of NSW 2026 saw Roland’s oil painting of Katoomba’s Townscape and its people included as a finalist in The Inaugural Hill Painting Prize. Receiving a special commendation by the prize’s benefactor, Blue Mountains Arist David R Hill.

“I believe that landscape speaks. For me there is a mystery present within it and artmaking is the method by which I try to understand it.”
