Print of original artwork - Anne works in pastel, watercolour & pencil.
21cm x 29.5cm
The small (66cm - 85cm tall) stocky Swamp Wallaby is the only member of its genus. It has dark brown fur, often with lighter orange/gold patches on the belly, chest and base of the ears. Colour varies with geographic range. In more northern populations, for example, the cheek stripes are quite distinct and overall colours more contrasting and golden.
The Swamp Wallaby lives in eastern Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and south-eastern South Australia in thick forest undergrowth or sandstone heath. It gets the name "Swamp" from its association with patches of dense damp vegetation.
The Swamp Wallaby feeds on a variety of plants including introduced species and native shrubs, grasses, ferns and, unusual for a large macropod, fungi.
The pouch life of a Swamp Wallaby joey is eight to nine months, but joeys may continue to suckle until 15 months of age. Females can suckle two joeys of different ages, producing two different types of milk to do so.
