The Swift Parrot is found only in South-Eastern Australia. It breeds exclusively in Tasmania, migrating to the mainland in Autumn. During Winter the birds forage in dry woodlands in NSW and Victoria and birds have also been recorded in South-Eastern Queensland, South Eastern South Australia and in the ACT.

The birds feed on nectar, mostly from eucalypts, as well as lerps, psyllid insects, fruit and seed. During the breeding season in Tasmania, the nectar from flowers of the Tasmanian Blue Gum (Eucalyptus globulus) are the principal food source, although Swamp Gum nectar is crucial in late winter.

The Swift parrot is a specialist nectarivore, so its survival is linked to the availability of the tree species on which it depends. Continued habitat loss, due to agriculture, residential development, plantation timber, sawlog production and clear-felling for woodchips, is the major threat to its existence. It is listed as Endangered on the IUCU Red List.
