THE LONG STRETCH

The Long Stretch comes from Ballard’s River Trails Collection, inspired by her local waterway, the Cooks River.

A place she continually returns to, the river has become a space to collect her thoughts, centre her soul and immerse herself in the ever-changing language of colour and light.

This work is a homage to nature and its quiet tenacity to connect, adapt and sustain us. The river, the birdlife and surrounding flora remind us that resilience is often found in simply keeping going — flowing with the tide, growing towards the sunshine and taking the next small step.

Artist Bio

Kristine Ballard is a Sydney-based artist known for her expressive use of paint and sumptuous colour. Working in her distinctive style, ‘Fragmatism’, she deconstructs form and reconstructs colour to create reimagined spaces that invite viewers to reclaim colour in their own lives.

A self-confessed colour lover, Ballard has pursued this fascination across continents, undertaking residencies in New York, Venice, and France. Yet it is the unique quality of Australian light that anchors her practice and helped shape the radiance and intensity of her palette throughout her art practice over the past two decades.

Her work explores themes of tenacity and splendour within both the natural world and the human condition. Through still life's, interiors, and landscapes, she elevates the everyday and often overlooked, using optical colour relationships to create depth, movement, and emotional resonance. Central to her practice is a belief in the transformative power of colour to influence wellbeing and perception.

Ballard’s art career spans international exhibitions, residencies, art prizes, and commercial collaborations. Guided by a commitment to help the world go “bright beyond beige,” her work celebrates colour as a force of resilience, beauty, and renewal.
