One of Australia's largest cockatoos (up to 65cm in length) these birds can be found in the forested regions of the country from south and central eastern Queensland to south eastern South Australia., with small populations in Tasmania and the Eyre Peninsula. The adult males have black beaks and pinkish-red eye-rings. Females have bone-coloured beaks, grey eye-rings and a brighter yellow cheek patch than the males.
The diet predominantly consists of the seeds of native trees, but they also eat the larvae of some tree boring beetles.
The Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo is protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) of vulnerable species, which makes the import, export, and trade of animals caught in the wild illegal. Numbers are decreasing, but it is listed as a species of 'Least Concern' on the IUCN Red List (2012).
